Pregnancy is a beautiful thing, but it could also be a dangerous journey. There are many causes of death in childbirth, and the reality that a lot of women die during childbirth is very scary. In a perfect world, no one should die while bringing new life into the world.

Maternal mortality is not new, especially to women in Nigeria. It has been a problem since the beginning of time. Previously, it was believed that when a woman died during childbirth, it was the will of the gods for her to pass during labour. Thankfully, many people are now aware that there are many causes of death in childbirth, and these causes have nothing to do with any divine being.

What are the Causes of Death in Childbirth?

Maternal mortality is a sad reality in Nigeria. Unfortunately, here are some of the reasons why women die during childbirth:

Excessive Blood Loss

It’s okay to lose some blood during childbirth, but when the bleeding becomes excessive, it poses a threat to the life of the mother and that of the unborn baby. Medical personnel is always on hand to mitigate the problem if the birth happened in a hospital. Most hospitals are equipped with machines to handle blood loss in childbirth, which is one of the leading causes of death in childbirth.

However, most Nigerian women give birth outside of hospitals, and some of these maternity homes and traditional birth attendants are not trained to handle the emergency. With no technical and medical know-how, the mother’s life and even that of the child could be at risk.

Preeclampsia is one of the Leading Causes of Death in Childbirth

Unusually high blood pressure during pregnancy is referred to as preeclampsia. Hospitals usually know how to manage preeclampsia when the pregnant woman gets an early diagnosis during prenatal checkups. In the absence of prenatal care, this medical condition will worsen to the point where it becomes a problem.

Untreated preeclampsia can lead to maternal mortality and it can even claim the life of the baby.

Lack of Adequate Pre-natal Care

Pre-natal classes in Nigeria not only to prepare the mother for the birth of her baby but they also serve the purpose of monitoring the mother’s health. Disregarding pre-natal care is one of the leading causes of death in childbirth.
As a pregnant woman, it is important to ensure that you are getting the best possible care.

Constant checkups are a necessity. Although medical checks during pregnancy are not very popular in some parts of Nigeria, ignoring it would most likely lead to very serious challenges during and even after delivery.

So How Exactly Can we Reduce the Causes of Death in Childbirth?

• The most important way to fight maternal mortality is making prenatal checkups a priority. Its importance cannot be overemphasized, as it could make the difference in whether a mother survives labour or not.

• Doctor’s appointments are crucial! You should be in active communication with your doctor so as to give them periodic updates about your condition. You have your life and that of your baby to consider!

• Pregnant women should not take any medication except those prescribed by the doctor. You shouldn’t just take any medication even when you’re ill. You should always confirm with your medical personnel. Some drugs are unsafe during pregnancy, and you want to steer clear of them because these drugs could become one of the causes of death in childbirth.

• It is important to be very conscious and alert physically, medically and otherwise. All round good health is the goal during your pregnancy. Report any changes to your doctor.
